Magnesium Bisglycinate

Ingredient detail

Ingredient context

Magnesium's relationship with sleep and anxiety is one of the more nuanced entries in this report, and the honest picture is mixed rather than uniformly positive.

Evidence context

A 2025 randomised, placebo-controlled trial of magnesium bisglycinate specifically, rather than cheaper magnesium salts, found a modest but statistically significant improvement in insomnia severity, with the chelated bisglycinate form chosen partly because it is better tolerated than magnesium oxide or citrate, which can cause digestive upset at effective doses. On the anxiety side, a systematic review looking specifically at magnesium and subjective anxiety found a beneficial effect in several vulnerable populations, but notably, in postpartum samples specifically, that same review found no significant effect on postpartum anxiety. We think it is more useful to state that clearly than to imply magnesium is a proven, stand-alone postpartum-anxiety intervention; in CALM, it functions as a general nervous-system and sleep-support nutrient alongside L-Theanine and Brahmi.
