Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri)

Ingredient detail

Ingredient context

Brahmi is Ayurveda's principal Medhya Rasayana, or “brain tonic,” and unlike several other herbs in this range, it carries a genuinely substantial base of human randomised controlled trials, not only preclinical data.

Evidence context

A frequently cited crossover trial found that a single dose of standardised Bacopa extract produced statistically significant improvements in cognitive performance and mood, alongside a measurably lower cortisol response to an acute stress test. A separate randomised trial in adults with self-reported poor sleep found improvements in emotional wellbeing with Bacopa supplementation, building on more than two decades of clinical research into the herb's effects on memory and verbal learning. Its most commonly reported side effects are mild and gastrointestinal, and it is generally considered to have a high therapeutic index.
